All About Flokati Rugs

Flokati rugs originate from ancient Greece, and have come in and out of popular decor.  They were very popular and near-celebrity status in the 1960's and 1970's, and have recently come back - and for great reasons!  They add a strong, unique visual treat to any room, and there is nothing your feet could like more.  Flokati rugs are the softest, shag-like, plush fluffy rug on the market.

Genuine wool Flokati rugs are hand-made with 100% pure wool from New Zealand, typically.  They resemble a shag rug, but are typically thicker and heavier, offering a great warm feeling during a cold season.  Being a handmade rug, they can have long rich lives, often surviving through several generations of family.

Caring for your rug is important, and proper care will help extend the life, and ensure your rug looks as good as possible.  A good shake now and then will help remove large particles that may collect, and will fluff up the rug.  It may sound strange, but raking or combing your Flokati rug will also help retain fluffiness.  We recommend a wide toothed comb if you have a very large area rug.

More in depth cleaning requires a good shake outdoors, followed by a hand washing with cold water and a mild soap.  You can machine wash a smaller rug, but definitely on a gentle cycle, and again it is important to only use cold water, as a warm or hot water bath may compromise the fiber of the wool.  Vacuuming your rug is also acceptable, but must be done with a suction attachment - nothing with a rotating brush.  A rotating brush or similar attachment will get tangled with the long strands of the rug.

While typical Flokati rugs are seen in white or soft shade of tan or cream, it is not uncommon to see them in many various colors, as the wool takes well to dying and retains vivid colors with proper care.  These rugs seem best fit for a bedroom, probably because it feels great on your feet in the morning, but they also seem to liven up an entertaining room nicely.

Embrace the slightly wild reputation of a Flokati rug today, and sink your feet in!
